Hairy cell leukemia

I am raising awareness about hematological malignancies this month.

Today, it's all about hairy cell leukemia.

Hairy cell leukemia is a type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes too many B lymphocytes. The disease is called hairy cell leukemia because the leukemia cells look "hairy" when viewed under a microscope.

They aren't functional which makes you suspectible to infections. These cells also take up space in the bone marrow, causing your red blood cell counts and platelet counts to go down. This makes you tired and very prone to bleeding.

Some of the leukemia cells may collect in the spleen and cause it to swell.

To everyone fighting cancer and losing hair, I haven't seen you, but I believe you are cute. Don't give up!
